League Sports • Travel/Feeder Basketball Program

Program Overview
The Wheaton Park District Travel/ Feeder Basketball Programs emphasize a higher level of competitiveness. Because this is a competitive travel basketball program, playing time is not guaranteed. Player progress during the season is strongly affected by player attendance, therefore, all practices and games have mandatory attendance. If everyone is on the same page, the team will be successful. This program is designed to help players progress as a player and as a person. The goal of this program is athletic development, having fun, and honest competition.

Volunteer Coaches Help Keep Costs Down
We are fortunate to have very knowledgeable volunteer coaches, we appreciate the time they donate to help with the program. By these coaches volunteering, we are able to keep the cost of the program down, passing on the savings to our program participants. The coaches help players develop their individual skills while focusing on the team as a whole. Every minute of practice time is valuable, so we ask parents to approach coaches before or after practice with questions, not during. Practices are open and parents are encouraged to attend. We ask that parents let the coaches do the coaching and avoid coaching from the sidelines.

Practices/Games
Teams will practice twice a week for 1 hour and 15 minutes each practice. Depending on the age level, teams will play between 30-50 games during a season. The older the kids, the more games they will play. Teams will play home games, away games, participate in leagues and tournaments. Games and tournaments are usually on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Some teams will have the occasional game during the week.

Wheaton Thunder Girls 5-8th Grade
The Wheaton Park District offers travel basketball teams for girls grades 5-8, called the Wheaton Thunder. Tryouts for the Wheaton Thunder girls travel basketball program takes place during the middle to end of September.  All players must pre-register to tryout.  To pre-register, please see the fall brochure for more information.  Tryouts are conducted by evaluators that don’t have a connection to the players that are trying out in order to be as fair as possible.  Once teams are selected, a volunteer coach will be chosen.  Teams will start practicing two times a week in the beginning of October and games start in the beginning of November.  The program will conclude at the end of February/beginning of March.  Girls 7th and 8th Grade teams will not practice in February or March due to the Middle School Girls Basketball Season.  The Wheaton Thunder teams will participate in the West Suburban Girls Basketball League.  These teams will also participate in either the Neuqua Valley League or Montini League.  If there are enough competitive players to form multiple teams at a grade level, we will do so. The 7th and 8th grade teams will not conflict with Middle School Basketball teams.

Wheaton Vipers Boys 4-6th Grade
The Wheaton Park District offers travel basketball teams for boys grades 4-6, called the Wheaton Vipers. The tryouts for this program will be in the beginning of October.  All players must pre-register to tryout.  To pre-register, please see the fall brochure for more information. Tryouts are conducted by evaluators that don’t have a connection to the players that are trying out in order to be as fair as possible. Once teams are selected, we will select a coach. Teams will start practicing two times a week starting in the middle of October and start games in the middle of November. The program will conclude in the beginning of March.  The Wheaton Viper teams will participate in the DuPage Youth Travel Baseball League (DYTBL).  If we have enough competitive players to form multiple teams at a grade level, we will do so.

Wheaton Warrenville South and Wheaton North High School Feeder Basketball
At the 7th and 8th grade levels, the Boys Head Varsity coaches at Wheaton Warrenville South and Wheaton North High Schools, run a boys feeder travel basketball program through the Wheaton Park District. The varsity coaches choose the teams and coaches at each level and the park district handles the administrative duties for all the teams. The varsity coaches work with the coaches they select in providing direction for the teams. The Boys 7th and 8th Grade program holds tryouts in the middle of October.  All players must pre-register to tryout.  To pre-register, please see the fall brochure for more information. The program starts in November with Sunday-only practices and runs until mid-March. This program will not conflict with Middle School Basketball teams.  If we have enough competitive players to form multiple teams at a grade level, the Head Boys Varsity Coaches will consider it.  This feeder program is for players that are planning on attending the high school of the feeder team they are trying out for. These teams will participate in the DuPage Youth Travel Baseball League (DYTBL).
