Cosley Junior Zookeepers-FAQs
Will I get to work with the animals?
Yes! Animal handling is a privilege earned by JZs who have accumulated 70 hours of service and then completed animal handling training (held during the second quarter). Animal Handling Training is optional, but must be successfully completed in order to handle any of Cosley Zoo's animals. Even if you have not qualified for animal handling, many of the tasks you will perform as a JZ involve caring for and observing the animals.
What do we do at the Junior Zookeeper meetings?
Each Junior Zookeeper meeting focuses on an aspect of animal care, visitor services, or conservation. Topics include communication techniques, animal enrichment, careers, and more!
What's a Wild Card Day?
Wild Card Days are held on the first Saturday of each month. They involve a wide range of activities, including team building, conservation and community projects, local trips, and assisting with Zoo events.
Where do the JZs meet?
A majority of our events occur at Cosley Zoo, 1356 Gary Ave., Wheaton IL 60187. However, we do take one day-trip to another zoo or aquarium each year. Transportation from Cosley to the destination will be provided. We also take a few smaller, local trips within the community. JZs are responsible for transportation and any applicable fees if you choose to attend these trips.
What if I have more questions?
Feel free to contact the JZ coordinator anytime!
