History: In the minutes of the first meeting of the Wheaton Park District Board of Commissioners on June 30, 1921, it is noted that the property which is Memorial Park has been purchased from the granddaughter of Erastus Gary, one of the founding fathers of the City of Wheaton, "to be a memorial park, with the remodeled barn to house the American Legion." In April, 1922 the first plans for the park were drawn up by a landscape gardener, and $3,000 was allocated to remodel what was then known as the "Hale St. Barn." A Works Progress Administration project in the 1930s helped with early remodeling of the building. As Wheaton's oldest park, Memorial holds a unique place in our history, and is more active than ever in the life of the Wheaton community.
