Luminary Bag Decorating

DuPage County Historical Museum • September 11 and October 2, 12-1P

Join the DuPage County Historical Museum in celebrating Family History Month by purchasing a luminary bag to decorate with names, photos, stickers and bright colors. These bags will be used to line the path at the upcoming Luminary Walk on October 9 at Arrowhead Golf Club. Customize your bag so that it stands out among the thousands, and join us that night to walk the path and find your family. These sessions are open to all ages, and families are encouraged to participate. Dates include Saturday, September 11 and Saturday, October 2 from 12 to 1 p.m.

The decorating session is free to attend; all art supplies are provided. Additional bags may be purchased at the Museum any time for $1 each. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of a photograph to decorate the bag for each family member.

Celebrate the Arrival of the 36th Regiment Illinois Flag

Thursday, September 23, 2010, 6-8pm • DuPage County Historical Museum

Restored Civil War Flag comes to Wheaton!
Please join us in welcoming the 36th Regiment Illinois Flag to the DuPage County Historical Museum, Thursday evening, September 23, 2010 from 6pm to 8pm. The evening will feature presentations by noted Civil War re-enactors and historians.  Max and Donna Davis will portray Mr. & Mrs. Lincoln followed by some remarks by Jerry Kowalski, as General Thomas.  Lastly, Kurt Carlson will speak to the flag’s significance and the history of the 36th Illinois Regiment.

The 36th Regiment, included soldiers from DuPage as well as Kane, Cook, Grundy, Kendal, Lawrence, McHenry, and Warren Counties. The flag, on temporary loan from the Illinois State Military Museum, is one of four Illinois Civil War Flags that has been restored to date and has been on display in the Hall of Flags in Springfield, Illinois.

The event is free and open to the public and will offer light refreshments.

Pumpkins Festival

Cosley Zoo • Throughout October

Thousands of pumpkins and “one-of-a-kind” scarecrows decorate Cosley Zoo throughout the month of October. Cornstalks line the zoo’s entrance, and the park’s foliage is a feast for the eyes. Apples, gourds, pumpkins, and cider are available to purchase.

Special activities are featured each weekend, weather permitting.

No registration required for this seasonal celebration.


3rd Annual Lincoln Marsh Walk for Awareness

Lincoln Marsh Natural Area • October 2, 9:30A

Support breast cancer awareness and benefit the Lincoln Marsh Natural Area!


Important Details:

• Walk starts at the east entrance to the Lincoln Marsh Natural Area (end of Lincoln Ave.)
• 2-mile walk along a wood-chipped nature trail
• Refreshments are served after the walk
• Proceeds benefit the Lincoln Marsh Natural Area and Central DuPage Hospital Breast Health Center

Online Registration will be available for this program on August 10 for residents and August 24 for nonresidents. If you prefer a paper form to mail or fax, please contact the Lincoln Marsh office at 630.871.2810.

Important: If you are new to the Wheaton Park District registration system and you wish to register online, please contact the Community Center at 630.690.4880 or fill out the online Household Account Update Form to receive a username and password.

Preregistration deadline is Thursday, September 30.

Luminary Walk: Shed a Light on History

In honor of your ancestors, join the DuPage County Historical Museum on October 9, 2010 from 6-9 p.m. in lighting a path as we celebrate and remember October as Family History Month. Stroll along the luminary path through the grounds of Arrowhead Golf Course and enjoy the ambiance, refreshments and beautiful symbolism. Arrowhead Golf Club is located at 26W151 Butterfield Road in Wheaton. This event is open to all ages and families are encouraged to participate. Fee includes an evening walk through Arrowhead Golf Course lit by luminary bags, a luminary bag for your family to decorate and add to the path, refreshments and appetizers provided by Arrowhead Restaurant and Bar, raffle prizes, magic by Jeanette Andrews, games and more. The walk will conclude with a bonfire and smore making. This is a wonderful way to remember and celebrate your family past and present.

DuPage County Historical Museum staff will also be at Arrowhead Golf Club for Arrowhead’s Kids Eat FREE promotion, on Wednesday August 25th and September 29th. Bags will also be available to purchase and decorate at Arrowhead Restaurant and Bar for $1 each from August 25th through October 8th . Decorate your bag while you eat!


**In order to have your bag be included in the Luminary Walk, all bags must be returned to the DuPage County Historical Museum or Arrowhead Golf Club by October 5.

“Spooktacular”

Cosley Zoo • October 15, 6-8 pm

Dress in costume and get ready for a fun evening packed with Halloween fun! Take a stroll through the straw maze, collect candy, meet live animals, carve a pumpkin, play games, enjoy refreshments and make crafts. Limit 100 people.

Halloween Happening

Whip up a great costume, bring your friends, and come out for a super fun time! Preregistration is not required, and all ages are welcome. There is a small fee for some events, and food concessions are available.

  • Costume Pageant with prizes
    Check-in 5:30-6 pm; Pageant 6 pm – Please bring a can of food to donate to a local food pantry to celebrate “Make a Difference Day.”

  • Andy Head
    With his expressive face and great showmanship, Andy Head presents a knockout show with juggling, comedy and audience participation that has you laughing and smiling until your face hurts! It’s the perfect blend of silliness and sophistication–verbal and visual–polish and im-provisation. Andy annually takes his wonderful and wacky act to more than 100 family-friendly events throughout the Chicago area.

  • “Trunk or Treat” (5-8 pm at Rice Pool & Water Park parking lot) – Imagine the parking lot full of exciting vehicles like a police car, ambulance, fire truck, snow plow, backhoe and dump truck decorated in a variety of Halloween themes…complete with treats! Children can parade from vehicle to vehicle and have the opportunity to see, touch, explore, honk the horn or sound the siren as they “Trunk or Treat.”

  • “It’s Bat-Tastic” (5-8:30 pm at the Community Center) – Visit with Lincoln Marsh staff and explore the world of our only flying mammal…the bat! Test your bat I.Q., listen to a bat-chat, look closely at a bat skull and skeleton, and make your very own bat mask or craft to take home. You’ll have a bat-tastic time!

  • Kidz Kingdom Craft (5-8 pm in Kidz Kingdom)


Trick or Treat Trail (from 5 to 8 p.m.)
Friendly characters line the Rice Pool bath house to hand out candy and prizes to small children. This event is a no scare zone! Parents must accompany children.• $2/child








Festival of Lights & Trees

Cosley Zoo • Friday, November 26 through December

20,000 twinkling lights and spectacular displays transform Cosley Zoo into a fairy tale winter wonderland from Thanksgiving Friday through the month of December.

The lights come on at 3 p.m. and the zoo closes at 9 p.m. Visit the animals and purchase a cup of hot chocolate, your tree, wreath and holiday gifts! Your purchases are tax deductible (to the full extent of the law).

Zoo members…be sure and take advantage of your membership discount!





Christmas Tree Lane

Decorating runs November 28-December 4

Gather together your scout group, friends, coworkers or family members to help decorate Cosley Zoo for the holidays! We provide a five foot tree and you provide wildlife-friendly ornaments and imagination. Your group can schedule a time to decorate your tree November 28-December 4.

Trees are displayed through December. Payment is due upon reservation; trees are limited so call today!

Breakfast with Santa Claus

Breakfast with Santa has become a tradition for Wheaton children. Each child enjoys a pancake breakfast, Christmas songs, games and a visit with Santa, and receives a favor to take home as a remembrance of this special morning. Confirmation tickets are mailed closer to the date.
