General Information • Safe Routes To Schools Program
The Wheaton Park District has partnered with CUSD200, the City of Wheaton and the City of Warrenville in the Safe Routes to Schools program. Detailed information on the program is available at http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/ and www.dot.il.gov/saferoutes/.
There are three main goals for the program:
1. To enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school
2. To make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age
3. To facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity (within 2 miles) of both public and private primary and middle schools (grades K-8).
In order to meet these goals, grants are available to encourage both infrastructure (sidewalks, traffic lights, etc.) and education projects. The first step in applying for these grants was to develop a Travel Plan for our community. A draft of the plan is accessible by clicking on the following link:
